Apereo Foundation Annual Report (2025–2026)

This year, the Apereo Foundation moved decisively from describing the challenges facing open source in higher education to building practical responses. We expanded our work with projects, institutions, funders, companies, and peer organizations while continuing to provide the fiscal, governance, community, and operational services that our software communities depend upon.

A record of the Foundation’s work from July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026.

Apereo Foundation Annual Report (2024–2025)

The 2024–2025 period was a transformative year for the Apereo Foundation, marked by strategic growth, deepened global engagement, and a redefined role as a steward of open-source innovation in higher education. Building on its mission to advance openness in teaching, learning, and research, Apereo expanded beyond traditional project hosting to offer “Foundation-as-a-Service” and “OSPO-as-a-Service” —supporting academic and nonprofit organizations with governance, sustainability, and infrastructure expertise.

Many of Apereo's projects' accomplishments highlighted the role—and benefits—of open, community-based collaboration "for education by education." Consider the successful launch of "TACT," a joint initiative from Japan's National University Corporation and the Tokai National Higher Education Research System in partnership with Gifu, Kyoto, and Nagoya universities. This consortium migrated over 16,000 courses to a new, shared, multi-tenant Sakai 20 architecture. Another example of peer progress is the S2U group, a consortium of eleven Spanish universities that joined forces to identify and develop solutions to improve Sakai's usability and functionality with enterprise integrations, including Office365, H5P LTI, and Safe Exam Browser. S2U's work proved so impactful it warranted a 250,000 Euro grant from the Spanish Ministry of Universities for the modernization of its university system through the European Union's Next Generation Funds.
