Purpose
The Apereo Foundation is committed to advancing awareness, collaboration, and adoption of open source technologies in education. To align with this mission, the Foundation supports and promotes events that are hosted by academic or non-profit organizations dedicated to fostering open source solutions in education.
Eligibility Criteria for Event Promotion
To qualify for promotion through Apereo’s communication pipeline (including newsletters, social media, and community forums), events must meet the following criteria:
- Host Organization
- The event must be organized or hosted by an accredited academic institution or a non-profit organization.
- The host must have a demonstrated commitment to open source advocacy in education, research, or technology development.
- Open Source Alignment
- The event must focus on open source technologies, practices, or communities relevant to education.
- Proprietary software or commercial sponsorship should not dominate the event’s content.
- Educational Impact
- The event should contribute to educational awareness, professional development, or community-building around open source in education.
- Topics may include (but are not limited to): open source software in learning management, research, administration, digital accessibility, and open standards.
- Non-Commercial Nature
- While sponsors may be involved, the event should not be primarily a commercial sales or marketing opportunity.
- Participation should be inclusive, with a focus on knowledge-sharing rather than product promotion.
- Public Accessibility
- The event should be open to a broad audience, including educators, students, developers, and administrators interested in open source solutions.
- Free or low-cost participation is encouraged to maximize accessibility. If a fee is required, a discount offer should be made available for the Apereo Community (individual and organizational members, project contributors, Apereo staff).
Promotion Process
To request promotional support from the Apereo Foundation, event organizers should submit a request including:
- Event name, date, and location (or virtual format details)
- Hosting organization and key contacts
- Event agenda or description, highlighting open-source content
- Registration details and participation guidelines
- Images and artwork
Requests will be reviewed to ensure alignment with this policy. Apereo reserves the right to approve or decline promotional support at its discretion.
Conclusion
This policy ensures that Apereo’s promotional efforts remain mission-aligned, supporting events that genuinely advance open-source adoption and awareness in education. We encourage academic and non-profit organizations to collaborate with us in fostering an open, innovative educational ecosystem.
