About Karen M. Sandler
Karen M. Sandler is a leading advocate for ethical technology and software freedom. Known as the "cyborg lawyer" for her advocacy on the life-or-death implications of free software, especially in medical devices, Karen serves as the Executive Director of the Software Freedom Conservancy. She co-organizes Outreachy, an award-winning program for underrepresented groups in tech. With a law degree from Columbia Law School and an engineering degree from The Cooper Union, Karen has held previous leadership roles at the GNOME Foundation and Software Freedom Law Center. Her contributions to software freedom have earned her numerous accolades, including the O'Reilly Open Source Award and an honorary doctorate from KU Leuven in 2023.
