Apereo Foundation Welcomes MuLTItool Forge into the Apereo Incubation Process
New open source initiative aims to help universities collaboratively build flexible learning tools
The Apereo Foundation is pleased to announce that MuLTItool Forge has officially entered the Apereo incubation process.
As colleges and universities increasingly rely on large enterprise Learning Management Systems (LMS), many institutions face growing challenges in adapting quickly to evolving teaching and learning needs. Faculty and instructional teams are experimenting with AI-enhanced learning, accessibility improvements, discipline-specific learning experiences, new assessment models, and student engagement tools, often faster than commercial LMS vendors can respond.
In many cases, institutions are building these solutions independently, solving similar problems in isolation. MuLTItool Forge was created to change that.
MuLTItool Forge is a collaborative open source community focused on developing, sharing, and maintaining reusable learning tools that integrate across LMS platforms such as Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, and Sakai. These tools are built using LTI® (Learning Tools Interoperability), an open standard that enables institutions to add new capabilities to their learning platforms without modifying the core LMS.
Rather than waiting on vendor development cycles or recreating tools campus by campus, MuLTItool Forge aims to create a shared space where institutions can openly collaborate on educator-focused solutions designed for interoperability and reuse.
“Higher education institutions are under increasing pressure to innovate quickly while maintaining flexibility and control over their digital learning environments,” said Patrick Masson, Executive Director of the Apereo Foundation. “MuLTItool Forge represents the power of open collaboration — helping institutions work together to build practical solutions that support teaching and learning needs across campuses.”
The project describes its mission as “forging” learning tools together — collectively refining and strengthening openly shared solutions so they become more adaptable, sustainable, and useful across institutions and LMS environments.
The initiative recognizes a growing reality in higher education technology: while enterprise LMS platforms remain mission-critical systems, much of the innovation happening around teaching and learning now occurs through modular applications that can be added, updated, or replaced without disrupting the broader campus platform ecosystem.
MuLTItool Forge seeks to help institutions collaborate more effectively within that environment.
“Universities frequently invest significant time and resources developing tools that already exist elsewhere in higher education,” said Wilma Hodges, Co-Founder and PMC Chair of MuLTItool Forge. “By building a collaborative community, MuLTItool Forge allows institutions to pool their expertise, eliminate duplicate efforts, and shape better solutions for learners and educators. The raw materials are here, the fire is lit, and it’s time to forge something great together.”
Unlike traditional software projects centered around a single application, MuLTItool Forge will serve as a curated ecosystem of open, LMS-agnostic learning tools developed collaboratively by institutions, developers, and educational innovators.
The project enters the Apereo incubation process as part of the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to supporting open, community-driven innovation in higher education technology.
Apereo’s incubation process provides scaffolding, mentorship, and governance guidance for emerging open source projects and communities during their formative stages. The process places strong emphasis on sustainability, open collaboration, and healthy community development.
