The Apereo Foundation Welcomes the Samvera Community
Open repository community expands Apereo's commitment to education, research, and digital preservation
The Apereo Foundation is pleased to welcome the Samvera Community to the Apereo ecosystem.
The Samvera Community is an international collaboration dedicated to developing and sustaining open source digital repository technologies used by libraries, archives, museums, and research institutions worldwide. Through a shared commitment to openness, stewardship, and community governance, Samvera helps organizations preserve and provide access to digital collections ranging from scholarly publications and research outputs to audiovisual materials and cultural heritage resources.
Samvera joins Apereo as a comprehensive community, bringing together software platforms, institutional adopters, developers, librarians, archivists, and digital preservation professionals working toward a common mission: ensuring that valuable knowledge and cultural materials remain accessible for future generations.
"Samvera represents an important expansion of the Apereo community," said Patrick Masson, Executive Director of the Apereo Foundation. "For many years, Apereo has supported open source communities focused on teaching, learning, identity management, calendaring, scheduling, and research. With Samvera joining the Foundation, we now extend that commitment to the libraries, archives, and cultural heritage professionals who play a critical role in preserving and sharing knowledge."
The Samvera Community develops and supports three primary platforms:
- Avalon Media System, designed for audiovisual collections
- Hyrax, a flexible and highly customizable repository framework
- Hyku, a turnkey repository solution built on the Hyrax platform
Together, these technologies support institutions seeking sustainable, community-driven alternatives for managing and sharing digital collections.
The addition of Samvera also marks a milestone for Apereo as the Foundation's first community specifically focused on library and archival technologies.
