For Immediate Release

The Apereo Foundation is pleased to announce that Georgia Tech’s LibreTech Collective (LTC) has joined Apereo as its newest Community Member, marking an exciting milestone for student-led advocacy of Free, Libre, and Open-Source Software (FLOSS) in higher education.

Founded in 2025 by Georgia Tech students with a shared passion for technology, ethics, and community, the LibreTech Collective is Georgia Tech’s only student-run organization dedicated exclusively to Free Software, open hardware, and open knowledge. LTC is built on a simple but powerful belief: technology should empower—not restrict—its users.

Guided by the Four Essential Freedoms, LibreTech Collective promotes projects, tools, and practices that allow people to run, study, modify, and share technology without unnecessary barriers. While many campus organizations explore open source broadly, LTC proudly and intentionally defines itself as a Free Software organization, offering members clear ethical and practical guidelines rooted in user freedom and community stewardship.

“Whether you’re a seasoned contributor or just beginning to explore what open source really means, LTC is a welcoming space to learn, collaborate, and build technology that serves the public good,” shared the LibreTech Collective.

A Natural Alignment of Values

LibreTech Collective’s mission closely aligns with Apereo’s long-standing commitment to open, community-driven software for education. Through Community Membership, LTC joins a global network of institutions, organizations, and projects working together to advance open technologies and open practices across higher education.

Apereo is especially excited to invite students from Georgia Tech to become contributors to Apereo-supported projects, all of which are GPL-compatible and deeply rooted in the principles of software freedom that LTC champions. These projects power real-world learning environments used by institutions and learners around the globe.

“We’re genuinely excited to support a student organization that is driven by Free, Libre, and Open Source Software principles,” said Jenn Cummings, Community Manager at the Apereo Foundation. “LibreTech Collective’s values strongly align with Apereo’s belief in open, community-powered software for good. By inviting students into our contributor communities, we’re giving them hands-on experience with real-world open source projects, helping them grow into the next generation of open-source advocates while building technology that impacts learners every day.”

Building the Next Generation of Open Source Leaders

Through collaboration with LibreTech Collective, Apereo aims to help students move beyond theory and into practice, gaining firsthand experience contributing to mature open source projects, engaging with global communities, and understanding how ethical, open technologies shape education at scale.

This partnership reflects a shared belief that the future of open source depends on empowering students not just as users, but as contributors, maintainers, and leaders.

About Apereo Foundation Community Membership

Apereo’s Community Membership Program grows the Foundation’s reach through cooperation, collaboration, and co-creation with organizations that share a commitment to open source in higher education, creating space for mission-aligned communities to engage regardless of size or resources. Community Members help identify, communicate, and address critical issues affecting open source awareness and adoption—whether initiatives originate within Apereo, the member organization, or jointly.

Looking Ahead

With LibreTech Collective joining Apereo, the Foundation continues to strengthen connections between student-led innovation and global open source communities. Together, Apereo and LTC look forward to supporting learning, collaboration, and the development of ethical, open technologies that serve education worldwide.
