August 27, 2025 — When the Linux Foundation examined open source across European governments and industries, and the Apereo Foundation surveyed U.S. higher education, the findings could have come from the same report. Despite serving vastly different sectors, both studies uncovered the same reality: open source is mission-critical, yet it is often deployed without the necessary strategies, investment, and leadership alignment to sustain it. Together, these reports highlight a striking global pattern — OSS is everywhere, but its long-term potential remains underleveraged.

August 26, 2025 — The Apereo Foundation today announced its participation as a key partner in the Distributed Open Education Network (Doenet) project, funded under the National Science Foundation’s Pathways to Enable Open-Source Ecosystems (POSE) Phase I program. Doenet is a collaborative project involving the University of Minnesota, The Ohio State University, and Cornell University. The initiative aims to establish a robust, sustainable, and accessible open source ecosystem for richly interactive mathematics curricula.

Our joint work on the U.S. Department of Education’s Proposed Priority on Advancing Artificial Intelligence in Education exemplifies the leadership that both organizations bring to the intersection of open source, education, and public policy.
