uPortal Community

Join the Apereo uPortal community!

Anyone is welcome to join the Apereo uPortal community and get involved. The easiest way to get involved is to subscribe to our uPortal mailing lists as described below. While the mailing lists works well for getting answers to your questions and discussing issues, you may wish to get further involved by self-registering on the issue tracking system to report issues and log feature requests.

Mailing Lists

One way to get involved is to jump on the lists and ideally to help answer questions and further discussion there. Several uPortal mailing lists are available to hear announcements, talk with other portal implementors or discuss uPortal development.

How to Contribute

Perhaps the easiest way to contribute is to download and install the code, join the implementors mailing list and share your experiences (good or bad) using the portal and share your ideas as to how it can be improved. You can also visit the wiki and contribute your ideas there.

At the next level, you can contribute code in the form of bug fix solutions, enhancements, uPortal channel or portlets. If you wish to contribute to the uPortal Framework itself, you should first subscribe to the uPortal Framework Developers mailing list as outlined above and discuss your contributions with the other developers.

Contributing Documentation

The uPortal project also needs contributions in the area of documentation. you can help. Our wiki is now the primary mechanism for documenting uPortal.

Attend a Conference

The conferences are great events for hearing the latest uPortal updates and networking with your peers. They are attended by developers, implementors, designers, architects, managers and campus leaders. Training opportunities are often available in conjunction with the conference.

Become an Apereo Member

The Apereo membership model consists of two elements. The first is a Core Foundation Subscription, paid by all members. This covers key services Apereo provides for all its software communities – technical infrastructure, legal and licensing support, community coordination, events, and outreach. The second is a Supporting Subscription for specific Apereo Projects.

uPortal Supporting Subscription

With the uPortal Supporting Subscription organizations can substantively and collectively support projects they use and depend on. The uPortal Steering Committee is responsible for determining how subscription funds will be used.

Our primary use is in support of securing a uPortal Community Liaison and Release Lead. This person would focus on:

  • Coordination and engineering of releases and pull requests
  • Testing
  • Bug fixing
  • Engaging the uPortal community

All uPortal Supporting Subscribers are entitled to:

  • Vote for a uPortal Supporting Subscriber representative on the uPortal Steering Committee
  • Being recognized as a uPortal Supporting Subscriber on the project web site
  • The gratitude from the uPortal Community for their valuable support
  • By becoming a uPortal Supporting Subscriber, you can help support continued improvements to the uPortal project such as releases that are more frequent, more complete, more stable, and better documented. Your support also helps make possible additional contributions from the community as potential contributors feel more welcome and encouraged.

By coming together as a community through uPortal Supporting Subscriptions we can collectively ensure that uPortal better meets the needs of higher education organizations and beyond. We encourage you to consider becoming an Apereo Member/Affiliate organization and a uPortal Supporting Subscriber. Contact Membership[at]apereo[dot]org for more information.
