Board Announces New Interim Executive Director of Apereo Foundation

The Board of the Apereo Foundation are pleased to announce that we have appointed Patrick Masson to the role of Interim Executive Director, providing leadership continuity and support for transition upon the retirement of Ian Dolphin, our current Executive Director.

Patrick (@massonpj) most recently served as General Manager for the Open Source Initiative after working within higher education IT for over twenty years, including roles as CIO within the State University of New York, and CTO at the University of Massachusetts' Office of the President. Prior to these, he served as the Director of Technology at the SUNY Learning Network and Director of the UCLA Media Lab.

Patrick is an adjunct instructor with SUNY Albany's College of Computing and Information and speaks frequently on topics related to open source software, open education, and educational technology. Patrick is the co-founder of EDUCAUSE's "Openness" Constituency Group and served on his local school board from 2014-2018.

The Executive Director role is not Patrick's first experience with the Apereo community having served on the Jasig Foundation's Board of Directors and on Apereo Foundation's Advisory Council. In addition he has presented at multiple Apereo events, including keynoting OpenApereo in 2015.

Patrick says: “Apereo is foundational for open source in education, serving as an incubator for innovation, and fundamental for community, fostering cooperation and co-creation. I am thrilled to help continue their important work to support openness in learning, teaching, and research.”

Board Chair, Anne-Marie Scott says: “The Board are delighted to welcome Patrick as our Interim Executive Director. His breadth of knowledge across open source, education, and our specific Apereo community mean that he brings both continuity and fresh perspectives, and we are excited to be working together as Apereo moves forward.”

Patrick has been appointed to serve as Interim Executive Director for 1 year, whilst the Board work towards the recruitment of an ongoing Executive Director role.
